About The Great Railway Cycle
The Great Railway Cycle is a charity cycling event organised by the Carrigaline & District Lions Club. The club was formed in 1988 and is part of the Lions Clubs International organisation.
With 46,000 clubs and 1.4+ million members, Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization. It is also one of the most effective and members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. The needs are great and our services broad, including sight, health, youth, elderly, the environment and disaster relief. Our international network has grown to include over 200 countries and geographic areas.
Here in Carrigaline, our club has had many notable achievements since 1988 including the provision of 16 houses for the elderly and building the Carrigaline Lions Youth Centre. We have also undertaken several local amenity projects such as the sail garden. In addition to serving the local community, we have also raised over €600,000 for various charities including Marymount Hospice, ARC and the Guide Dogs.
This year the cycle follows the general route of the Bandon and South Coast Railway which closed in 1961 and the name of the event has changed from the Carrigaline Lions Cycle Classic to The Great Railway Cycle.
